A Midwest community bank is reviewing its overdraft fee policy for personal and small business checking accounts.Banks with over $1 billion in assets collected more than $11.45 billion in overdraft and non-sufficient funds (NSF) fees in 2017, according to a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation report, making these fees a significant revenue source, considering the average fee is $35.
Keep or increase overdraft fees and the bank may lose customers and its standing in the community; but eliminate the fees and access to overdraft an account, then customers may not have access to funds for emergency transactions and the bank loses a revenue source.
The bank also has the option to offer overdraft coverage.
